Lot Essay
The present lot is notable for not only being an example of an early Ming dynasty bank note, but also as one of the largest of Chinese paper notes produced. There were two chance discoveries from which the present note may have originated:in 1900,a cache of bank notes was discovered within a figure of a Buddha in the Summer Palace of the Qing court, and in 1936,another cache was discovered when one of the city walls of Beijing was being demolished. For a closely related note of similar dimensions and condition, see the example in the collection of The British Museum,#1913,1011.30,(https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/C_1913-1011-30)which was given to the museum in 1913,accompanied by "A handwritten note reads 'Found inside a Buddha of the Ming period'."
