Chu Teh Chun is a widely acclaimed Chinese-French modern painter who dexterously merged techniques of traditional Chinese calligraphy with those of Western Abstract Expressionism in his works. As a graduate of the National School of Fine Arts in Hangzhou, Chu studied under Wu Dayu and Fang Ganmin, who were both considered fathers of Chinese oil painting. Yearning to further cultivate his understanding of Impressionism, Chu left his role as a professor at the National Taipei University in 1955 and embarked on his journey to France. While Chu was an extremely talented realist painter, he decided to abandon his practice of figurative painting upon his life-changing visit to the retrospective of Nicolas de Staël at the Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris in 1956. Chu explained the rationale behind this major decision later in life: ‘De Staël was a great revelation for me. Previously, I was an objective painter, but     now I am no longer interested in this way of painting, because after having begun to study abstract painting, I profoundly and obviously felt the freedom of expression which it testifies to.’ i

To his surprise, the exploration of abstract painting led Chu down the path of combining Chinese and Western artistic aesthetics, while preserving the most fundamental essentials of each. In the 1960s, Chu developed a sensational dreamlike style of abstraction, achieved through expressive brushstrokes and quivering use of colour, which offered his works a brand-new balance between vitality and tranquility. Deeply influenced by his fondness of Chinese poetry and calligraphy, Chu believed that poetry and painting adhere to the same rule and rhythm. It is thus of no surprise that his abstract artworks also possess lyrical qualities.

Le 30 mars 1982 is a work that marks the milestone of Chu’s ever-growing artistic achievements. Its creation followed an important retrospective of Chu at the Musée des Beaux-Arts Andre Malraux at Le Havre in 1982, showcasing paintings and drawings produced since his arrival in Paris. At the summit of his expressive intuition and painted in the same year as this retrospective, Le 30 mars 1982 manifests Chu’s magnificent spirituality and poetic sensibility. As a bright source of light pierces through thick heavy clouds to disrupt the serenity of the overall composition, the artwork demonstrates Chu’s mastery of chiaroscuro, which he had been perfecting since his encounter with Rembrandt’s use of light in the 1970s. Going into the 1980s, such theatrical contrast of light and shadow became a recurring effect of Chu’s works. Le 30 mars 1982, with its sublime complexity, marks the height of this motif, and captures the ascent of Chu’s artistic achievements among his contemporaries.

Apart from his chiaroscuro technique, Chu’s training in caoshu, a form of cursive calligraphy, with the modern ink master Pan Tianshou during his time in Hangzhou has also constituted an undeniable fundament to his eventual success. The spontaneous yet well-restrained free strokes of caoshu undoubtedly emerges in Chu’s execution of Le 30 mars 1982, gifting the work with a Chinese-ink-reminiscent nature at its interface with Western Abstract Expressionism. The combination of abstraction and calligraphy alludes to the distinctive intellectual heritage of China, specifically to the two icons of literati art of the Song dynasty, Su Shi and Mi Fu. While the former saw art as a form of expression for the artist’s inner world, the latter innovated a technique known as ‘splashed ink’, which uses moist washes and textured strokes to evoke the misty sceneries of Southern China. Incorporating essentials of both abstract expressionism and Chinese cursive calligraphy, Le 30 mars 1982 undoubtedly pays homage to the two Song dynasty masters, while transcending the demarcation between Chinese and Western aesthetics.
