Walasse Ting(1929-2010): Scholars on Boats
Ink on paper. Scholars on Boats. Signed A Xiong, with one seal mark of the artist. Walasse Ting (1929–2010), Chinese-American painter and poet, was renowned for his vivid palette and sensuous imagery. Born in Wuxi, China, he moved to Paris in the 1950s, aligning with the CoBrA group, and later to New York, where he absorbed Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. His iconic depictions of women, flowers, and animals blend Eastern calligraphy with Western spontaneity. Ting’s landmark book 1 Cent Life (1964) paired his poetry with prints by Warhol, Lichtenstein, and Mitchell. His works are represented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Tate, and the Centre Pompidou, affirming his legacy as a leading postwar international artist.
Provenance: Property from the Chen Family Collection, La Cañada Flintridge. Mr. Chen, a distinguished retired attorney specializing in corporate law in the Los Angeles community, began collecting Chinese paintings and works of art in the 1970s. Much of the collection was acquired directly from artists as well as through auctions and estate sales across Southern California.(Lot 1206-1230, 1265-1272)
