The Collection of Ambassador John L. Loeb Jr.
Ambassador John L. Loeb Jr.’s collection stands among the most significant assemblies of Danish art in private hands, shaped by a rare combination of historical awareness and personal conviction. Appointed United States Ambassador to Denmark by President Ronald Reagan, Loeb lived in Copenhagen from 1981 to 1983, a period that proved decisive in orienting his taste as a collector. Immersing himself in a field then little-known beyond Scandinavia, he pursued works that resonated on an instinctive level, building a collection not according to fashion but through sustained, independent looking. As Gertrud Oelsner, PhD, Director of the Ordrupgaard Museum—home to one of the world’s foremost collections of Vilhelm Hammershøi—has observed, the collection reflects a distinctly personal perspective, even as it parallels the breadth and ambition of Denmark’s great institutional holdings.
Now comprising more than 140 works, the collection traces a rich arc from the Danish Golden Age through the Modern Breakthrough, encompassing artists from C.W. Eckersberg to P.S. Krøyer and subjects ranging from intimate interiors to luminous landscapes and genre scenes. It offers a nuanced view of nineteenth-century Denmark at a moment of profound social and cultural transformation, while maintaining a consistent emphasis on clarity of vision and artistic quality. As Oelsner notes, Loeb’s discerning selection of artists, from canonical figures to those less widely recognized, “remind us that great beauty and richness can be found when we dare to look beyond the familiar and allow ourselves to discover something new.” Developed organically over decades, the collection is both deeply personal and broadly consequential; through exhibition and loan, it has helped bring Danish art to international audiences, effectively serving as an ambassador for a national tradition long underrecognized beyond its borders.

The work is in very good condition overall. The canvas is slightly slack. There are two hairline scuffs to the center of the lower horizontal edge, visible upon very close inspection and mostly under raking light. When examined under ultraviolet light, a few small spots to the extreme edges fluoresce.

Associated with the Skagen Painters and the Danish Modern Breakthrough, Michael Ancher (1849-1927) developed a distinct form of modern figure painting that combined plein-air observation with rigorous, classically structured composition. Ancher arrived in Skagen in 1874 in search of a new artistic direction, where he met the local, artistically gifted Anna Brøndum, beginning a lifelong personal and professional partnership. After the two were engaged in 1887 and married in August 1880, the pair ultimately secured broad public recognition and a lasting position in the canon of nineteenth-century Danish art.
