A Shoushan Stone Multi-Layered Openwork 'Pastoral Farming and Studying' Scholars' Rock, Qing Dynasty
Estimated Date: Late Qing Dynasty. A Shoushan stone landscape and figural scholar's mountain carving (shanzi).
Attribution: The carving is executed from a single piece of pale yellowish-green Shoushan stone and displays the elaborate openwork craftsmanship characteristic of the late Qing period. The front is intricately carved in multiple layers with a picturesque landscape populated by a water buffalo, farmer, immortal attendant, pavilions, and mountainous scenery, creating a strong sense of depth and movement. The reverse is decorated in low relief with wooded hills and rustic dwellings, providing a harmonious continuation of the landscape. The combination of openwork carving, finely detailed figures, and idyllic rural imagery exemplifies the scholar's desk ornaments (shanzi) favored during the late Qing Dynasty.
Comparable Auction Results: Comparable late Qing Shoushan stone openwork landscape carvings with figures have realized RMB 6,000–18,000 at Chinese auctions, while similar examples have appeared in international Asian art sales with estimates generally ranging from USD 800–2,200.
