This early and wonderful Submariner reference 5513 from 1962 – the first year of 5513 production - exhibits all the subtle nuances passionate collectors seek in a highly desirable vintage Rolex. In production until 1989, the 5513 differs from its close relative, the chronometer-certified 5512.
Though the watch itself dates to 1962, its sale at the beginning of 1964 and the corresponding date code for the first quarter of 1964 on the bracelet makes perfect sense considering it was sold at the U.S. Marine Corps Exchange in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The Cuban Missile Crisis occurred between 16-28 October of 1962 (an 892’XXX means that the 5513 was likely produced in the last few months of 1962). Though family members were allowed back to the base in December 1962, it makes sense that due to the ups and downs of the Cold War and the fallout from the Cuban Missile Crisis, there were much reduced non-essential military activities during this time period.
The watch is preserved in utterly fantastic condition. Beautiful golden puffy luminous plots, nearly flawless “Swiss Only” gloss dial with gilt lettering, and a probably unpolished case with ultra-rare pointed crown guards. The combination of the exceptional state of preservation, original guarantee, hang tag, and box (including the insert urging the purchaser of the watch to use the box for cigarettes), and the historical context of its purchase make it a must-have for the vintage Rolex collector.

Dial: The dial is in exceptional overall condition. Beautiful puffy golden lume to all hour markers, with no loss or visible aging. Lume plots match the luminous material of the handset. Small area of breakage to the minute hand. Gilt printing present. Some oxidation present to the metal of the handset. Black gloss dial intact with no signs of loss or crackling. All lume reacts correctly and uniformly under UV light.
Case/Bracelet: The case is in similarly excellent overall condition. Small scratches and areas of wear to the reverse of the lugs consistent with the age of the watch. The watch is, in our opinion, unpolished. Crisp chamfers and lug holes present. Milled finishing to the outer part of the caseback consistent with unpolished. Small nick to the lower right lug. Bezel insert in excellent condition. Type of font consistent with early 5513 bezels. Extensible bracelet is in very good overall condition with minor stretch. Shallow wear to clasp. All engravings between the lugs are crisp with no signs of rubbing.
Movement: The movement is running at the time of cataloguing. Service history unknown; a service of the movement is recommended.

Founded in 1905 England by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis as Wilsdorf & Davis, it soon became known as the Rolex Watch Company in 1915, moving its headquarters to Geneva in 1919. Like no other company, the success of the wristwatch can be attributed to many of Rolex's innovations that made them one of the most respected and well-known of all luxury brands. These innovations include their famous "Oyster" case — the world's first water resistant and dustproof watch case, invented in 1926 — and their "Perpetual" — the first reliable self-winding movement for wristwatches launched in 1933.
