And death shall have no dominion

Dead men naked they shall be one
With the man in the wind and the west moon;
When their bones are picked clean and the clean bones gone,
They shall have stars at elbow and foot;
Though they go mad they shall be sane,

作为一个旅居海外多年的中国艺术家，在中西文化的双重冲击下，徐冰的艺术作品始终建立在个人的真实体验之上，持续反思现有的社会和文化现象。人与文化的关系是其作品问题意识的出发点。而与文化最直接相关的便是对文字语言的研究。
回顾徐冰的艺术创作，从80年代末的《天书》打开了对文字本质的质问和对文字形式的重新审视，到“新英文书法系列”对英文字母和中文汉字两大文字体系的融合尝试，徐冰对文字的持续思索和发问从未停止。“新英文书法”系列不仅是对英文字母的重新解读，同时也是对中国汉字书写之美的当代呈现，中西文化在该作品系列成功融为一体，无论是来自何种文化的观者，都可以将新英文书法作为全新的客体进行认知，视觉形式为身处相异文化的人架构了沟通的理解的桥梁。
在此幅创作于2007年的作品中，徐冰选择了英国著名诗人迪伦·托马斯的《死亡将不能主宰一切》进行书写。迪伦·托马斯是40年代以来欧美诗坛最为重要的诗人之一，其诗歌主题往往围绕着生、死、欲三个主题展开，联系至人类最本质的生命力量展开抒发，因而其作品总是弥漫着神秘但直击心灵的力量。迪伦·托马斯对生命的持续探索使他的诗歌拥有了超越文化的意义，这与徐冰的“新英文书法”系列相比无疑是殊途同归之作。
徐冰的新英文书法选择了中文的外形，英文的内容进行表达，迪伦·托马斯的诗作在他的创作中被抽离了部分属于文字本身的功用性和可读性。无论是文字意义还是内容层面的思维惯性，都受到了强烈的冲击。二者的碰撞远远超越了作品本身承载的符号性文化概念，物质和精神在此一作品中得到了完美的契合。
尽管“新英文书法”系列的创作至今仍在延续，但徐冰对其的思考早已不单纯是对中西文化的融合，伴随着对当代社会的深刻感知，徐冰为作品注入了更强的社会化倾向，即艺术对当代社会的责任，艺术需要为人类生命历史中所出现的问题持续揭露、发问和反思。而徐冰与《死亡将不能主宰一切》的结合试图启示当下：生命的意义并不能被死亡所终结，当对人性的思考、对平静心灵的探索将成为生命更为本质、更为深刻的追寻。
