拍品描述:

China, Qing dynasty, Qianlong period (1736-1796) late 18th century
The present finely carved pale celadon jade mountain exemplifies the consummate artistry achieved by jade carvers during the late 18th century, a period celebrated for its technical virtuosity and refined naturalism. The composition, delicately worked in varying levels of relief, depicts the Three Friends of Winter - pine, prunus, and bamboo - flourishing amidst a rocky landscape with a cascading waterfall. These resilient plants, enduring through the cold season, symbolize steadfastness, perseverance, and integrity, virtues long cherished in the Chinese scholar’s tradition.
During the height of the Qing dynasty, particularly under the Qianlong Emperor (r. 1736-1795), jade carving reached an unparalleled level of sophistication. Craftsmen, inspired by classical painting and the literati ideal of communion with nature, transformed the hard stone into lyrical landscapes of poetic resonance. The present work reflects that aesthetic: the softly polished surface, subtle translucency, and even celadon tone of the stone were carefully selected to evoke serenity and harmony.
The sculptor’s masterful command of depth and texture - from the sinuous pine branches to the rippling waterfall - demonstrates both technical precision and imaginative vitality. Such miniature jade mountains were prized as objects of contemplation on the scholar’s desk, embodying a microcosm of the natural world and the moral ideals it represented.
